Goldmine Land Slide: Senate Urges Solid Minerals Minister to Investigate Incident


The Senate on Thursday, has urged the Minister of Solid Minerals to investigate the recent landslide incident at a gold mining site in Galadiman Kogo, Shiroro Local Government, Niger State, which resulted in the death of over 30 informal miners.

This call followed a motion sponsored by Senator Musa Mohammed Sani (Niger East) on the urgent need to address the incident.

Senator Sani, leading the debate, noted that the landslide occurred on Monday, June 3, 2024, at the open-pit gold mine, burying alive at least 30 local miners in the Galadiman Kogo ward of Shiroro Local Government, Niger State.

He described the incident as catastrophic and disheartening, as the miners lost their lives in their quest for gold and lithium minerals.

Contributing to the motion, Senator Neda Imasuen called for a holistic legislation to guide mining in the country, to monitor mining activities across the country, and harness the benefits of the mining sector.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin, commended the mover of the motion, describing it as sympathetic, and urged the relevant committees of the National Assembly to step up oversight of mining activities.

The Senate observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims, call for investigation and legislative action aims to ensure the safety of miners and the responsible management of the mining sector.
